1. “You did well”
Yoo Shi-jin’s father: Who’ll make a person without strings, a general? You even threw away the chance to become a major.
Yoo Shi-jin: I did as you taught me. Please be proud.
Yoo Shi-jin’s father: In the path of a soldier, there are days when going to the guardhouse is more honorable than being promoted. You did well.
Yoo Shi-jin is back in Seoul and meets his father for a photo shoot. While waiting for their turn, his father tells him that he should have become a judge or doctor like what her deceased mother said. He replies that it would have been a great loss for him to become a judge or doctor given that he is both smart and athletic, adding that he will become a general and take another picture with his father. His father then mention that he already threw away his chance to become a major, so how can he even become a general? He was referring to what Yoo Shi-jin did during the crisis involving the president of the Arab League, which resulted to punishments including salary deduction and exclusion from rank promotion. However, he was not disappointed at all at his son’s actions. In fact, he is so proud of him and tells him that he did the right thing.
2. Solid Friendship
This scene gives us a gist on the Yoo Shi-jin and Sergeant Seo Dae-young’s friendship and thrills us as they run away together from a group of soldiers who wanted to beat them up. These soldiers are under Sergeant Seo’s intensive training team whom he told to pick a fight with him when they are outside the training camp. The friendship of Captain Yoo and Sergeant Seo is something to be envious of—no much drama and always at each other’s back.
The second couple has another drama again. Seo Dae-young finally answers a call from Yoon Myeong-ju but he did not say anything. So Yoon Myeung–ju has to do all the talking, blatantly telling him that she knows how much he really loves her.
Yoon Myeong-ju: Seo Dae Yeong did you just answer my call? You answered the phone! Why did you answer my call? Is everything okay? Tell me anything. I know you are there… It’s okay. Just listen to me then. Just don’t hang up the phone, okay? I’m doing fine here. I’m wearing my combat uniform. So I didn’t get a mosquito bite. And I’m in good health here. I miss Seo Dae Yeong a lot. Did you meet Si Jin? He made fun of me a lot when he was here. He joked around about me coming her just to see you. He said I’m pretty but I look prettier when I put away my pride. I don’t care about my pride. I know how much Seo Dae Yeong loves me… Are you listening to me? Let me hear at least your breathing if you are listening to me.
This scene of Yoo Shi-jin looking out the bus window and having no idea at all that below him is an advertisement featuring Kang Mo-yeon is so dramatic. The thoughts of Kang Mo-yeon being heard in the background makes the scene all the more memorable and superb. She is having a text conversation with her friend:
Kang Mo-yeon’s friend: You are coming back to Korea soon, aren’t you? I’ve got good wine for you.
Kang Mo-yeon: I don’t drink with a woman. Prepare a man for me instead. A good man.
Kang Mo-yeon’s friend: What about the man you met on the other side of the world? He is not your type as you see him again?
Kang Mo-yeon: That’s not it. He was the best. I shouldn’t have received an apology. I should have held him. And I should have confessed my love. I’m the one who missed all the opportunities. How could he have liked me?
Kang Mo-yeon did not send her reply to her friend’s question. We could see then how regretful she is now that she’s separated again from Yoo Shi-jin, who is currently spending time alone riding a bus in Seoul.
5. The patient is dead
A deadly earthquake hit Uruk, forcing Kang Mo-yeon and her team to cancel their trip back to Seoul. They have to stay now that their skills as doctors are needed the most. In this particular scene, Lee Chi-hoon is performing a CPR on a patient affected by the disaster. Kang Mo-yeon arrives at the scene and declares that the patient is dead but he is still doing it and insisting that he can still save the patient. He didn’t stop until his senior slaps his face. He is told to “stop acting like a child. If you’re a doctor, act like one.”
Being a doctor requires not just mental alertness, but also emotional readiness for a tough situation like this one. In the case of Dr. Lee, he is mentally prepared for the scenario but lacks enough emotional strength to face challenges that involve the very death of his patient. A patient under his care died and he just can’t accept that fact. This scene essentially reminds us that doctors cannot save the lives of their patients all the time. And if the time comes for them to face such a reality, they have no choice to accept it and move on.
Focus: Song Hye-kyo
Song Hye-kyo is the other half of the Song-Song couple best known for their roles in Descendants of the Sun as Dr. Kang Mo-yeon and Captain Yoo Shi-jin. Although she became more popular worldwide because of DOTS, she has long been admired for making people cry over her well-portrayed characters in other dramas.
The actress was born on November 22, 1981, with a weak physique and was diagnosed to live a short life. At a young age, she had to face not only her sickness but also her parents’ decision to separate. This, however, did not stop her to enjoy things in life. She was into figure skating until the eighth grade and into modeling at the age of 14.
Her modeling career started after she won the SunKyung Smart Model contest, which was instrumental in getting herself a role in the drama First Love. She was in the series for two years and portrayed a student being tutored by a character named Hyo-kyung. In 1997, she appeared in different shows such as Happy Morning, Beautiful Face, 70-Minute Drama: When They Met, and One of a Pair. From 1997 to 2000, she had more prominent roles in Wedding Dress, Six Siblings and SBS hit sitcom called Sunpong Sanbuingwa.
Her first big break came in the KBS drama, Autumn in my Heart with which she won the PaekSang Arts Award for Most Popular Female in Television. She played the role of Eun-suh who was switched at birth with another girl and fortunately met loving parents and a brother played by actor Song Seung-hoon. However, the truth was revealed and she returned to her original family. The tragic love story between her character and that of Song Seung-hoon started when they met again and fell in love with each other.
Autumn in My Heart is one of the many dramas starring Song Hye-kyo which made it big abroad such as Japan, Europe, Philippines, and Taiwan. Since then, she was offered many other lead roles in similarly popular Korean dramas. One of these is the romantic-comedy Full House in which she played the role of a writer who pretended to be the wife of a famous actor played by Rain. She also starred in Guardian Angel, Hotelier, All in, Rays of Sunshine, Worlds Within, and That Winter The Wind Blows.
Song Hye-kyo’s excellent portrayal of Dr. Kang Mo-yeon in DOTS earned her recognition that she deserves. She and Song Joong-ki won the Asia Best Couple Award and Best Couple Award as well as the Grand Prize during the 2016 KBS Drama Awards. Earlier in 2016 during the Paeksang Arts Awards, she received the Most Popular Actress Award and got nominated for the Best Actress award category.
