Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo are now taking legal steps to end their 20-month or nearly 2-year marriage, both actors announced on June 27.
Song Joong-ki is starring in the ongoing historical drama Arthdal Chronicles while Song Hye-kyo recently headlined the 2018-2019 romantic series Encounter. Both are widely known as the leads of the mega-hit 2016 romantic melodrama Descendants of the Sun where their real-life romance supposedly started to blossom, resulting in their marriage in October 2017.
Earlier today, Song Joong-ki’s legal representative said in an official press release, “Our law firm filed a divorce petition at the Seoul Family Court on June 26 on behalf of Song Joong-ki.”
The representative also showed an apologetic letter written by Song Joong-ki himself. “I am sorry to give the bad news to those who love and support me,” the actor wrote.
Song’s management agency, Blossom Entertainment, later released an official statement saying that the couple have decided to split after a “careful consideration” and have a “smooth agreement” to process their divorce. The agency asked the public to refrain from spreading speculations and false information regarding the divorce since it is the actor’s personal matter.
Meanwhile, actress Song Hye-kyo’s label, United Artists Agency, also made an official announcement about her breakup with Song Joong-ki, pointing out that the reason behind the couple’s decision is the “differences in their personality.”
“The two sides were unable to overcome their differences, which inevitably led to this decision,” the agency revealed.
Song Hye-kyo’s agency stated that they cannot elaborate any further out of respect for the privacy of both actors. Likewise, it asked the public to avoid making groundless rumors about the couple.
Earlier this year, a number of media outlets reported that Song Joong-ki and Song Hye-kyo were spotted separately in different locations without their wedding rings on.
