‘Angel’s Last Mission: Love’ beats ‘One Spring Night’ in TV ratings during premiere

Two new Korean dramas premiered Wednesday night and entered the ever-competitive ratings race for the first time, with KBS2’s Angel’s Last Mission: Love topping the ranking among the terrestrial dramas and beating its MBC rival One Spring Night.

According to Nielsen Korea, Angel’s Last Mission: Love obtained nationwide audience shares of 7.3 and 9.2 percent for its first two episodes while One Spring Night recorded 3.9 and 6.0 percent. The difference in the ratings between the two series is surprisingly bigger than expected, from 3.4 percentage points in the first episode to 3.2 percentage points in the second. Both dramas are headlined by popular actors whose last series managed to score high TV viewership.

The result of last night’s broadcast is likely even more disappointing for the officials of MBC who must have been expecting favorable results following the network’s recent decision to air its weekday prime time dramas from 9 p.m., challenging the decades-old broadcast schedule that starts at around 10 p.m. One Spring Night is the first-ever terrestrial drama which followed the said change in time slot and is the first major Wednesday-Thursday terrestrial series to compete directly with non-drama programs of the two major networks (KBS2 and SBS).

Angel's Last Mission Love Poster

Angel’s Last Mission: Love is a fantasy romantic comedy about an angel, played by Infinite’s L (Miss Hammurabi), who accepts a mission to find the true love of a professional ballerina so that he can return to heaven, only to end up being the one who falls for her. Shin Hye-sun (Thirty But Seventeen) is starring in the drama as the ballerina.

One Spring Night, on the other hand, is a romantic melodrama about two ordinary persons—portrayed by Jung Hae-in (Something In The Rain) and Han Ji-min (The Light In Your Eyes)— who have had their shares of a failed romantic relationship in the past that they are trying to forget. They are living a humdrum life until their meeting which leads them to seek what their hearts truly desire, instead of being fixated on faith. The drama is also available globally on Netflix.

Meanwhile, SBS’s Absolute Boyfriend came in third in the ranking with 2.6 and 3.0 percent. It is starring Yeo Jin-goo (The Crowned Clowned) and Bang Min-ah (Beautiful Gong-shim) and follows the love story of a makeup artist and a humanoid robot.

In cable TV, tvN’s Her Private Life and OCN’s Save Me 2 posted modest viewership of 2.7 and 1.7 percent, respectively.
