Actress and former f(x) member Sulli passes away

Singer-actress Sulli, whose real name was Choi Jin-ri, had been found dead at her home in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province on October 14.

The 25-year-old actress was already dead when authorities arrived at the scene. According to the Seongnam Sujeong Police Station, her manager found Sulli’s body in her bedroom on the second floor at her home at around 3:20 p.m. KST. The manager visited the actress after phone calls to her went unanswered since the evening of October 13 although she had an appointment on Monday.

The ongoing investigation has yet to confirm the cause of death of the actress but a police official said, “It seems [that] she killed herself.” Police authorities found a handwritten note “that expressed her feelings.”

Sulli debuted as a child actress in 2005 with Ballad of Seodong before joining the K-pop girl group f(x) in 2009. In 2014, she went on a hiatus after becoming the target of hateful comments online. In the following year, she left the group to focus on her acting career whose highlights include her leading roles in the series To The Beautiful You (2012) and film Real (2017). Her most recent drama appearance was in Hotel Del Luna (2019), which is headlined by IU, also a singer-actress known to be her close friend.

Sulli was in talks to star in the second series of Netflix’s original short film project Persona.

Throughout her life as a public figure, Sulli had received a barrage of malicious comments for being an outspoken female celebrity in Korea. In June 2019, she began hosting JTBC’s The Night of Hate Comments, a variety show dedicated to dissecting the impact of cyberbullying and malevolent rumors. Through the show, Sulli earned admiration and hate in equal measures after she advocated for women not conforming to societal standards by going braless. She was also one of the only K-pop artists to frankly discuss mental illness through her song “Goblin.”

Meanwhile, several actors, including Ku Hye-sun and Ahn Jae-hyun, posted the news of Sulli’s death on their Instagram accounts, while others like Kim Yoo-jung and Sulli’s labelmates from SM Entertainment postponed their respective schedules indefinitely.

As a gender studies student, she loves analyzing K-dramas through the lens of gender politics and social justice. You're most likely to find her droning on and on about how Ji Hae-soo from It's Okay That's Love and Sung Bora from Reply 1988 are the best heroines to ever grace our screens. Her favorite dramas tend to be thrillers like Secret Forest and Signal, as well as heartwarming shows like Misaeng. When not in the mood for either of those, you can find her binging on shows about female friendships a la Age of Youth or rom-coms that come with sprinklings of feminism, like Because This Life Is My First. She lives in India, spends all her free time reading books, and would love nothing more than to meet Gong Hyo-jin and sign away her life's earnings to the actress.
