On the 19th, actor Son Seok-gu‘s agency confirmed his appearance in tvN’s Designated Survivor.
The show, a remake of the 2016 American series of the same name, is a political thriller about the events that unfold after a bombing incident kills the president and several high-ranking government officials of South Korea, leaving the “designated survivor” in charge of the Presidency for 60 days.
In the United States government, a designated survivor is an individual in the presidential line of succession who is in a secure and undisclosed location whenever the President, the Vice President, and other officials in the line of succession gather at a single location for important events, such as the State of the Union addresses and presidential inaugurations. In the original version of the series, the designated survivor, played by Kiefer Sutherland, is the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development when the explosion occurs.
Actor Ji Jin-hee (Misty) has been roped in to play Park Moo-jin, the Minister of Environment and South Korea’s designated survivor at the time of the terrorist attack. Park Moo-jin has no political greed or ambition but has no choice to become the acting president and find out the perpetrators of the bombing. Kang Han-na (Familiar Wife) is reported to be considering the offer to star opposite Ji.
Son Seok-gu will be playing Cha Young-jin, Park Moo-jin’s main aide and secretary general who will eventually become the Presidential Secretary for Administration. In the original, this character (Aaron Shore) was played by Mexican actor Adan Canto and is described as a brilliant guy who combines his sense of responsibility with a cold, unapproachable persona and impeccable manners.
2018 was a busy year for Son, with back-to-back appearances in the critically-acclaimed tvN drama Mother, and KBS2 dramas Matrimonial Chaos and Suits. This year has already started on a strong note for the actor with his appearance in the Gong Hyo-jin starrer action movie Hit-And-Run Squad. With Designated Survivor, Son returns to his home turf of tvN and looks set to deliver a memorable performance.
Designated Survivor will be adapted by Kim Tae-hee, the writer of Beautiful Mind (2016) and Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2013) and Yoo Jong-seon, who co-directed the popular series What’s Wrong With Secretary Kim (2018) and Descendants Of The Sun (2016). It is scheduled to air in the first half of 2019.
