The 56th Baeksang Arts Awards has announced its nominees on May 8 and is finally pushing through, sans the audience.
Also known as “South Korea’s Oscars,” which was initially scheduled to take place on May 1, the Baeksang Arts Awards had been pushed back one month due to concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic. It will be held on June 5 at KINTEX in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province, and aired on JTBC.
The prestigious annual event is organized by the publisher of Ilgan Sports, IS PLUS Corp, to honor the cast and crew of TV programs, films, and theater productions released between April 1, 2019 and April 30, 2020.

This year’s nominees are quite the set. A notable nominee is Netflix’s original series Kingdom Season 2 for Best Drama and Technical Award for visual effects. The historical zombie thriller, penned by Kim Eun-hee, is the first-ever web-based show in the history of the awards ceremony to earn a nomination.
Meanwhile, KBS2’s When the Camellia Blooms and tvN’s Crash Landing on You go head-to-head, bagging nine and eight nominations, respectively, such as Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Actress, to name a few. This is reminiscent of last year’s nominees, JTBC’s SKY Castle and tvN’s Mr. Sunshine, which bagged nine nominations each, the highest number of nominations for 2019. JTBC’s Itaewon Class is not far behind with seven nominations, including Technical Award for music.

SBS dramas Hyena and Stove League round out the list of nominees for Best Drama.
Cable TV’s highest-rated series The World of the Married (JTBC), with four episodes left to air, also received nominations, including Best Actress and Best New Actress.
Parasite, the international hit that made history as the first non-English film to win an Oscar for Best Picture, also received multiple nominations, including Best Film.
