2PM’s Junho, Lee Se-young confirmed to pair up in new historical drama ‘The Red Sleeve Cuff’

MBC’s upcoming romance sageuk (historical drama) The Red Sleeve Cuff has officially found its leading couple in Lee Jun-ho (Junho) and Lee Se-young.

Based on a popular novel of the same name by author Kang Mi-Kang, The Red Sleeve Cuff is described as an authentic depiction of the imperial court romance between King Jeongjo of Joseon and Royal Noble Consort Ui-bin Seong.

Junho is set to put on the royal robes as Yi San, a direct descendant and eldest grandson of King Yeongjo. Growing up, Yi San solely strived to become a good and wise leader, but everything changes when he meets court lady Seong Deok-im. In front of her, his arrogant, stubborn, and perfectionist nature gets overshadowed by a romantic side of him he never knew existed. One day, Yi San becomes crowned as King Jeongjo, a title that will soon create conflicts inside his heart as a ruler who must constantly assert authority and a man who is just passionately in love.

Initially known as a member of the boy band 2PM, Junho has since proven to be as talented in the field of acting through noteworthy portrayals in the series Rain or Shine (2017–2018), Wok of Love (2018), and most recently, in Confession (2019).

Meanwhile, Lee Se-young will transform into Seong Deok-im, a court lady who would rather choose an independent life than become another one of the king’s concubines. However, she crosses paths with Yi San and falls in love with him. As Yi San ascends the throne, Deok-im’s peaceful existence takes a drastic turn when she is later named Royal Noble Consort Ui of the Seong clan. Amidst the intense and chaotic political affairs in the palace, Ui-bin Seong remains a simple woman who always finds happiness and positivity even in the smallest of things.

Starting in the entertainment industry as a child artist, Lee has now become one of South Korea’s successful actresses. Her career spans over 20 decades, boasting lead-star participation in the dramas A Korean Odyssey (2017–2018), Doctor John (2019), and Kairos (2020), among others.

The Red Sleeve Cuff is helmed by director Jung Ji-in of Hold Me Tight (2018) and penned by The Emperor: Owner of the Mask (2017) writer Jung Hae-ri. It targets to air as a Wednesday-Thursday drama in the second half of 2021.
