2021 Baeksang Arts Awards: ‘It’s Okay To Not Be Okay’ earns 8 nominations

The 57th (2021) Baeksang Arts Awards has revealed Monday (April 12) its nominees for TV, film, and theater.

Dubbed as South Korea’s version of the Academy Awards, the prestigious annual event will be held on May 13 at KINTEX in Ilsan, Gyeonggi Province with no audience in light of the pandemic. It will be broadcast live on JTBC at 9 p.m. KST.

The 57th Baeksang Arts Awards will recognize shows that aired on free-to-air channels, cable channels, over-the-top (OTT) streaming services, and the web from May 1, 2020 to April 11, 2021. For a series to qualify, at least one-third of the entire production should have been made available, online or offline, by April 11.

It will also honor Korean feature films and plays that were released in Korea during the same period. In respect to the various voices in the industry, a preliminary survey was conducted by 40 industry experts prior to the final selection of nominees.

The annual event is organized by the publisher of the Korean news outlet Ilgan Sports, IS PLUS Corp.

The nominees for this year are nothing short of impressive. Following the notable nomination of the second season of Kingdom for Best Drama last year, Extracurricular, another original series by Netflix, is up for the same award. The teen crime drama will go up against three projects from tvN: It’s Okay To Not Be Okay, Flower of Evil, and My Unfamiliar Family and one from JTBC, Beyond Evil.

The series with the most number of nominations are It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and Beyond Evil, with eight and seven, respectively, while the popular SBS drama Penthouse—which is gearing up for its third season—bagged six nominations, such as Best Actor and Best Actress, to name a few.
